2019 "Home" Competition

"Every house, every architectural product... should be a result of our efforts to build a paradise for people." — Alvar Aalto

Home remains the most significant architectural place we experience throughout our lives. It represents safety, ownership, privacy, and stability. Home is where we can be alone, together with our most cherished individuals. Throughout history, home has been an enduring place. Despite the chaos in our lives, we value the consistency of sleeping in the same bed and engaging in the same daily rituals. However, new trends in digitization and globalization continue to reshape the realm of everyday life, altering our physical environments, including our homes. Studying how we can adapt our living spaces to these changes is crucial.

Architects have long studied the role of residences in our lives. These investigations provide us with new concepts of domestic environments, sometimes holistic like Peter Eisenman's "House VI" or Le Corbusier's "Unite d'apartment," and sometimes specific like OMA's elevator in the "Bordeaux House."

The Home Design Competition invites all designers to explore ideas for the future of residential architecture. Designers may consider the impact of global population migration, the proximity of major cities to coastlines, new materials and construction technologies, and the rise of markets like co-living, micro-housing, smart homes, and Airbnb. Home creates a platform to speculate on how new technologies, political changes, environmental shifts, and cultural changes might redefine the spaces where we live.

What do you think the future of homes will look like?
