Taiwan Humanitarian Architecture Award

The 2019 Building 4Humanity Design Competition (B4H-DC) aims to address the concept of architecture as a social and cultural facility by seeking design ideas that will contribute to achieving social inclusion and integration of Syrian war refugees in the Turkish border city of Reyhanlı.

Since the outbreak of the war in 2011, more than 5.6 million people have fled Syria, seeking safety in Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, and other regions (UNHCR, 2018). During this time, Turkey alone has hosted as many as 3.6 million Syrians. At least 90% of these people live in urban or peri-urban areas outside refugee camps, with 70% being women and children. An estimated 40% (about 380,000) of Syrian children are currently unable to access education and basic healthcare services.

Reyhanlı is a Turkish town located in the Hatay province on the southeastern border with Syria. As a major gateway from Turkey to the Syrian city of Aleppo, the town has become a primary entry point for Syrians seeking refuge during the ongoing conflict. Consequently, Reyhanlı's population has nearly doubled over the past 8 years.

Despite having a relatively calm urban environment, Reyhanlı is not entirely immune to the risks of war and conflict. In May 2013, the town experienced two bomb attacks that resulted in 52 deaths and 146 injuries. Since 2011, it has also been the target of numerous rocket attacks, causing further casualties, with the most recent in January 2018.

Apart from the threat of terror attacks, Reyhanlı faces social issues due to the sudden increase in population. These issues involve poverty, unemployment, water and power shortages, lack of infrastructure, insufficient public facilities for housing, healthcare, education, and recreation. The origin of these problems has heightened tensions between Turkey and Syria in Reyhanlı.
